on archival paper
with inks that will last a century,
He then saddle stiched and trimmed the 40 page
magazine formatted
illustrated history by hand.
Knowing that the very nature of his subject, Enchanted Rock, is sacred, Ira's
design, illustrations and writing are a homage to his spiritual home. The result
is, within itself, a work of art.

ENCHANTED
ROCK TEXAS
Enchanted
Rock began to form over one billion years ago as molten lava rose up from the center of
the Earth, then cooled before surfacing. Over the millenia erosion worked its way
down exposing the chain of granite outcrops now associated with Enchanted Rock. Like
the tip of an iceberg, the dome of Enchanted Rock, which covers about one square
mile, is but a small part of the Enchanted Rock batholith which is the core around which
the land mass of Texas formed. Here is the geologic center of the state. And
for Native Americans, going back before recorded time, it was and is a sacred site.

photographer, artist and publisher has devoted to Enchanted Rock. Much of the
articles presented here were originally featured in his now defunct Enchanted Rock
Magazine.

syndicated "The Sound of Texas," with Tumbleweed Smith, and the syndicated TV
program Texas Country

Ira
was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department
for providing numerous educational talks at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Feature
articles by Ira have been published by Texas
Monthly, Texas Highways Magazine and in The Nature of Texas (hardcover
anthology) Texas A&M Press.
Considered as the state's leading authority on Enchanted Rock, the sacred mountain
of Central Texas, Ira has assisted the authors of several published books, articles and
the Thomas Evans mural in the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
